AP Chinese Reading: A Complete Guide to the Reading Section
The AP Chinese reading section is a quarter of your exam score, and it rewards method as much as vocabulary. Students who know what the texts look like, which words carry the meaning and how to manage the clock score higher than students who simply read more slowly and carefully. This guide covers the current format, the reading strategies that work, the vocabulary and grammar that decide most answers, the characters students confuse, and a way to learn from every mistake.
The reading section at a glance (from May 2027)
- 30 multiple-choice questions in 40 minutes
- 25% of the total exam score
- Six question sets across five task types
- Fully digital, in the Bluebook app
- Texts can be shown in simplified or traditional characters
The exam format changed for 2026-27
The AP world language exams were revised for the 2026-27 school year. If a prep book or practice test shows 35 to 40 reading questions in 60 minutes, or a Conversation and a Cultural Presentation in the speaking part, it describes the format used up to May 2026. Its reading practice is still useful; its timing is not. Practise with the current numbers.
The video walks through the reading section with example texts and strategies. Use this page as the written guide alongside it.
Where reading fits in the whole exam
| Section | Task | Share of score |
|---|---|---|
| Section I: Free response | Project Presentation (speaking) | 20% |
| Project Q&A (speaking) | 15% | |
| Story Narration (writing) | 7.5% | |
| Email Response (writing) | 7.5% | |
| Section II: Multiple choice | Part A: Listening, 25 questions, 25 minutes | 25% |
| Part B: Reading, 30 questions, 40 minutes | 25% |
The course is organised around six themes, and the reading texts draw on the same topics: Families and Communities, Language and Culture, Art and Creativity, Science and Technology, Contemporary Life, and Global Contexts.
Managing 40 minutes
Thirty questions in 40 minutes gives you about 80 seconds per question, or roughly 6 to 7 minutes per question set. Short texts should take less, so you can bank time for the longer passages.
- Check the clock after each set, not after each question.
- If a question is still unclear after a second look, choose your best answer, mark it for review and move on.
- Answer every question. AP multiple-choice scoring does not deduct points for wrong answers.
Reading strategies that work
1. Read the questions before the text
The questions tell you what to look for: a time, a reason, a place, the writer’s purpose. You then read with a target instead of trying to understand every character.
2. Identify the type of text first
A notice, an advertisement, an email, a text message and a short article each organise information differently. Ask three questions: who wrote it, to whom, and why. A notice (通知) will give dates, times and instructions; an email will open with a greeting and close with a request or plan.
3. Scan for the key information
Numbers, dates, times, prices and names stand out on the page. Find them first, then read the words around them closely.
4. Guess unknown characters from their parts
You will meet characters you do not know. The radical often tells you the field of meaning, and the sentence tells you the rest.
| Radical | Meaning field | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| 氵 | water | 河 hé (river), 洗 xǐ (wash), 海 hǎi (sea) |
| 讠 | speech | 说 shuō (speak), 话 huà (words), 请 qǐng (ask, invite) |
| 扌 | hand, action | 打 dǎ (hit, make a call), 找 zhǎo (look for), 拉 lā (pull) |
| 饣 | food | 饭 fàn (meal), 饿 è (hungry), 饺 jiǎo (dumpling) |
| 钅 | metal, money | 钱 qián (money), 银 yín (silver; 银行 bank) |
5. Eliminate before you choose
Wrong options are often built from words that do appear in the text, but in the wrong role: the opening time instead of the closing time, the person who asks instead of the person who answers. Cross out options the text contradicts, then compare the two that remain.
The words that carry the meaning
Most questions about reasons, contrasts and sequences are answered by a handful of connectors. Learn them as pairs, because the first word tells you what the second half of the sentence will do.
| Connector | Pinyin | Meaning | What it signals |
|---|---|---|---|
| 因为……所以…… | yīnwèi… suǒyǐ… | because… so… | a reason and its result |
| 虽然……但是…… | suīrán… dànshì… | although… (but)… | a contrast; the answer usually follows 但是 |
| 如果……就…… | rúguǒ… jiù… | if… then… | a condition |
| 不但……而且…… | búdàn… érqiě… | not only… but also… | adding a second point |
| 除了……以外 | chúle… yǐwài | apart from, besides | an exception or an addition |
| 可是 / 不过 | kěshì / búguò | but, however | a change of direction |
| 然后 / 后来 | ránhòu / hòulái | then / later on | the order of events |

Grammar points that decide answers
| Point | Example | What to notice |
|---|---|---|
| 没 vs 不 | 我没去。/ 我不去。 | “I didn’t go” vs “I’m not going / I don’t go” |
| 了 (completion or change) | 他走了。/ 我不能去了。 | “He has left” / “I can no longer go”: a plan has changed |
| 还是 vs 或者 | 你喝茶还是咖啡?/ 茶或者咖啡都可以。 | 还是 asks for a choice; 或者 states options |
| 有点 vs 一点 | 有点贵。/ 便宜一点吧。 | “a bit too expensive” (before the adjective) vs “a little cheaper” (after it) |
| 比 and 没有 | 哥哥比我高。/ 我没有哥哥高。 | “taller than me” / “I’m not as tall as my brother” |
| 都 | 我们都是学生。 | “all of us”; 都 refers back to the subject before it |
Questions about time often hinge on 了 and 没: a sentence with 没 tells you something did not happen, even if a plan for it is mentioned elsewhere in the text.
Characters students confuse
Under time pressure, similar characters cause more wrong answers than unknown ones. These pairs come up again and again:
| Pair | Pinyin | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| 买 / 卖 | mǎi / mài | buy / sell |
| 已 / 己 | yǐ / jǐ | already (已经) / self (自己) |
| 入 / 人 | rù / rén | enter (入口, entrance) / person |
| 未 / 末 | wèi / mò | not yet / end (周末, weekend) |
| 午 / 牛 | wǔ / niú | noon (下午, afternoon) / cow |
| 太 / 大 | tài / dà | too / big |
Read 买 and 卖 by the top stroke
卖 (sell) has the extra 十 on top. In an advertisement, 卖 is what the shop does; 买 is what you do.
Cultural context in the texts
Some questions can only be answered with cultural knowledge, because the text assumes it.
| You read | It means |
|---|---|
| 打八折 dǎ bā zhé | 20% off: you pay 80% of the price. 打五折 is half price. |
| 元 / 块 | yuan: 元 in writing, 块 in speech and informal texts |
| 2027年5月13日 | Dates run year, month, day |
| 星期一 / 周一 | Monday; both forms are common |
| 春节, 中秋节, 国庆节 | Spring Festival, Mid-Autumn Festival, National Day (1 October) |
| 红包 | a red envelope with a money gift |
| 王老师, 小王, 老王 | Teacher Wang; 小 + surname for a younger friend, 老 + surname for an older one |
A worked example
通知
因为国庆节,学校图书馆十月一日到十月三日不开门。从十月四日开始,图书馆每天早上八点开门,晚上九点关门。借了书的同学,请在十月十日以前还书。
Notice: Because of National Day, the school library is closed from 1 to 3 October. From 4 October, the library opens at 8 a.m. and closes at 9 p.m. every day. Students who have borrowed books, please return them before 10 October.
Question: Why is the library closed from 1 to 3 October?
- Identify the text. 通知 tells you to expect dates, times and an instruction.
- Find the signal word. The question asks “why”, and 因为 at the start of the first sentence gives the reason: 国庆节.
- Watch for the trap. A question about closing time from 4 October has two times in the text. 开门 is opening (8 a.m.); 关门 is closing (9 p.m.).
- Read the instruction. 以前 means “before”: books are due before 10 October.
Learn from every mistake
After each practice set, label every wrong answer with its cause. After a few sets, one or two causes will stand out, and those are what you practise next.
| Cause | What to do next |
|---|---|
| Unknown word | Add it to a theme list and review it in a sentence |
| Misread a character | Write the pair side by side and test yourself |
| Misread the grammar (了, 没, 比) | Rewrite the sentence and translate it exactly |
| Chose a distractor | Find the exact words in the text that rule it out |
| Ran out of time | Practise sets with a timer at 6 to 7 minutes each |
The same method works for any reading exam. Our GCSE Chinese higher tier reading guide applies it to another exam format.
Practice
Read the message and answer
小王:明天下午的电影我不能去了,因为我妈妈生病了,我得在家照顾她。我们下个周末再去,好吗?小李
- Why can’t 小李 go to the film?
- What does 小李 suggest?
- What does 了 in 不能去了 tell you?
- A shop sign says 所有衣服打五折. How much do you pay for a 200元 jacket?
- Which character means “sell”: 买 or 卖?
Answers
- 小李’s mother is ill, and 小李 has to stay home to look after her (因为 gives the reason).
- Going next weekend instead (下个周末再去).
- A change: the plan was to go, and now he can no longer go.
- 100元. 打五折 means you pay half.
- 卖
Key takeaways
- From May 2027, reading is 30 questions in 40 minutes and 25% of the score.
- Budget about 80 seconds per question and check the clock after each set.
- Read the questions first, identify the type of text, then scan for numbers, times and names.
- Connectors such as 因为, 虽然, 但是 and 如果 point straight to most answers.
- 了, 没, 比 and 还是 are the grammar points that most often change the meaning.
- Similar characters (买/卖, 已/己, 入/人) cost more points than unknown ones.
- Label every mistake by its cause, and practise the cause that appears most.
